jane jacobs died at 89

Jane Jacobs 4 月 25 日在多倫多一所醫院去世了，終年 89。
網上的 New York Times 有兩篇半悼念半評論她的文章： Outgrowing Jane Jacobs and Her New York 和 Jane Jacobs, Social Critic Who Redefined and Championed Cities, Is Dead at 89，另重刊一篇四十五年前（1961 年 11 月 5 日）載於該報的書評 Neighbors Are Needed。
我認識她是近一年的事。那天在書店看見一本書名大概是美國城市的生與死的國內版英文中譯書，很詳盡描述和評析美國的城市，作者是女性，似乎是一位社會學者，雖然是幾十年前的著作，仍覺有趣，於是買下了。不意她的死訊卻讓我認識她在城市生活的研究極具權威。
她在 1961 年完成的經典著作 The Death and Life of Great American Cities 的最大成就，是超越了她一貫以來對二十世紀城市計劃的輕蔑批評，提出重建城市的徹底新原則。
她在書中提出締造市政的多樣性 (municipal diversity) 的四個建議：
1. A street or district must serve several primary functions.
2. Blocks must be short.
3. Buildings must vary in age, condition and use.
4. Population must be dense.
